Krefeld. He wanted to strengthen fitness and team spirit in equal measure and had come up with a special training session for his team: Ron Andrae, coach of the 1st men’s team of the Krefeld gymnastics club / handball, and his players Markus Vermeulen (goalkeeper) and Björn Knott made a team donation of 250.00 Euros to the stups-KINDERZENTRUM of the DRK sisterhood Krefeld.

The background: Andrae had come up with a training competition to motivate the players during the ongoing training interruption due to the corona restrictions to also carry out the training with the necessary distance and not in the hall. Because the goal of the season is promotion from the district to the state league, according to the coach. The exercise consisted of running training (7 to 8 kilometers) and handball-specific strength exercises. The team was divided into small groups of six players each – the members of the losing team were asked to donate 10 euros each. “It was important to me that everyone communicates with one another,” said Ron Andrae. He found the stups-KINDERZENTRUM via internet research and “when the players found out what they were donating for, everyone – including the winning team – wanted to make a contribution”. Player Björn Knott added: “For me the purpose of the donation was another additional training incentive”. With the support of a player’s wife and an increase from the team budget, 250 euros were ultimately raised.

Anja Claus, the head of the stups-KINDERZENTRUM, was happy about the visit and the donation. She described to the visitors how seriously ill children and their families, sometimes over the years, are accompanied and relieved of the care efforts in child and youth hospice work. Often the children suffered from severe and painful cramps due to the illness, so the topic of relaxation via the possibilities in the Snoezelen room is an important part of the work. A guided tour through the house is not possible in Corona times, but Anja Claus gave an impression of the rooms and offers using photos.

In the course of the conversation, a new idea arose: If offers are possible again in sports halls, Knott, Vermeulen and their teammates want to organize an afternoon of exercise for the nudge-children.
