Handball controversy: Lidingö vs Kungsängen Match Drama and Competition Unit’s Response

The meeting between Lidingö and Kungsängen has been followed by great speculation. Now the competition unit announces that they are aware of the course of events.
– We have been in contact with various people who have noted this, says the Swedish Handball Association’s head of competition Adam Engström to Handbollskanalen.

Sunday’s meeting between Lidingö SK and Kungsängens SK in division 2 east north was the last match before the series was divided into a continuation series and a promotion series.

There didn’t seem to be much drama when Lidingö raced away to a comfortable lead and with just over a minute remaining the home team was leading 35-19, which meant that Kungsängen were four goals behind Åkersberga in the third and last place in the promotion series ( the teams were on the same score).

But in the final 67 seconds of the match, Kungsängen scored four goals, securing third place – one goal ahead of Åkersberga.

For Lidingö, Kungsängen’s advancement to the promotion series means that they get another six “plus goals” because they defeated Åkersberga 34-28.

The competition unit aware

The handball channel has been in contact with the association’s competition unit. There they say that they have heard about the match, but that there is not yet a case with a judging body (the disciplinary committee).

– We have been in contact with various people who have noted this. We have spoken with the district to clarify this. It is very unusual with this type of question and it is very much about where it is in terms of regulations. It is not about any protest, it is about whether Lidingö would have done something to benefit themselves or the opponent. says Adam Engström, competition manager, and continues:

– A situation like this is not covered by protest rules, if there were to be a case, match-fixing rules would apply in that case. But as I said, we are at a stage where we are gathering information and it is not certain that there will be any case, therefore I cannot say more at the moment.
