Although THW Kiel won their previous main game on Sunday with 29:24 SC Magdeburg won, Patrick Wiencek did not see his team as the favorites for this game. In the Dyn interview before the game, Timo Kastening reiterated that MT Melsungen could “play without pressure” here. The North Hessians had a 26:31 win on Saturday Rhein-Neckar Löwen lost.
The 9,721 spectators in the Wunderino Arena Kiel saw a start full of mistakes on both sides. Thanks to a tight defense and thanks to the outstanding Nebojsa Simic, Melsungen was able to quickly take a 2-0 lead (4th), but the loss of the North Hesse ball then brought THW Kiel into the game, which did not only equality, but also made it 3-2 the lead was taken (8th).
Aaron Mensing won North Hesse after nine minutes without a goal with his goal to equalize (11th). Rune Dahmke was able to put THW ahead again from the second wave, but Mensing immediately equalized again for Melsungen (4:4, 13th).
Melsungen ran away
When Dainis Kristopans increased the lead to 6:4 with a double strike, Filip Jicha asked for his first out. He wanted to invigorate his team both in attack and defence.
As a result, THW was responsible for the seventh fielder. But Kiel still couldn’t get Kristopans under control at the back. The 2.15 meter man put Arnarsson under the spotlight, which he did 7:4. At the front, the home team did not manage to score even when they had the majority.
Rune Dahmke ended Zebras’ seven-minute drought with his goal to make it 5:7. But after two more ball losses, Melsungen increased the lead to 5:9. After this 2:7 run, Jicha took his second time unusually early (19th). He appealed to his team’s body language and asked for “more power”.
Simic again and again
After a block against Domagoj Duvnjak, Balenciaga gave Central Hesse the first five-goal lead. Things didn’t go smoothly at Kiel, either New substitute Karl Wallinius was denied by Simic, who had five saves and a rate of 50 percent after 20 minutes. The Kiel team’s shooting percentage was only 35 percent, so MT’s six technical fouls so far were insignificant.
As Andreas Wolff, unlike in recent games, was not a factor against Melsungen, Tomas Mrkva was between the Kiel posts from the 26th minute. But even the Czechs couldn’t prevent the home team from trailing 8:15 at halftime.
Too big a mortgage
After Mgrkva was able to make a save, Andreas Wolff returned to the THW goal after the break and was now able to get his hands on the ball more often. The Zebras were able to quickly reduce the lead to 11:16 with a 3:1 run.
The Kiel crowd got the feeling going again and the home team’s body language was completely different than in the first half. Roberto Garcia Parrondo called his second period after just eight minutes and tried to get his team to adapt to Kiel’s fast game.
After Duvnjak reduced the score to 12:16, Dainis Kristopans stopped Kiel’s run with his fifth goal in his fifth attempt to make 12:17. The Fördestädters could not shake this deficit in the following minutes.
Stress in a time of crisis?
At 14:19, Filip Jicha gathered his team one last time in the 47th minute: he wanted to see more resolution. At the front, the THW played again with the seventh field player, at the back Landin preferred against the infallible Kristopans.
With two important saves, Andreas Wolff ushered in a critical – perhaps inspiring – moment. With a 3-0 run, the Kiel team was able to reduce the score to two goals nine minutes before the final whistle (19:21). At the back, Wolff made important saves again, including a seven meter penalty.
In attack, however, the Zebras failed again more often due to their own efficiency, so Melsungen was able to increase the lead again to four goals (20:24, 57th) and in the end they celebrated a deserved win 25:21 away in Kiel.
