After three defeats at the start of the season, HSG Wetzlar achieved its first win in the handball Bundesliga. The Central Hesse team won their away game at TVB Stuttgart on Sunday with 26:23 (13:12). The win meant they left last place in the table and moved back into midfield.

Wetzlar slept through the opening phase, found the game poorly and fell behind 1:5. But the HSG stabilized, equalized after 20 minutes (8:8) and went into the break with a 13:12 lead.

HSG demonstrated strong nerves

After the break, the Swabians came back and equalized to 16:16 after 43 minutes. In the final phase, the HSG showed strong nerves, pulled away and defended their lead through good defense and an accurate offense until the final siren.

Dominik Mappes (6 goals), Domen Novak (5), Stefan Cavor and Lukas Becker (both 4) were the top scorers against Stuttgart. Former Wetzlar player Lenny Rubin was the hosts’ most accurate player with seven goals, and they were without Kai Häfner after just 20 minutes because of a red card following a foul.

“It was a tough fight”

Wetzlar’s top scorer Mappes said after the game. “It was a tough fight. We knew there would be no beauty prizes today. The victory was deserved in the end and the first points of the season are extremely important for us.”

HSG coach Frank Carstens said: “The decisive skill today was to deal with mistakes better than the opponent. We always managed to not respond with a mistake when we stupidly lost the ball at the front or conceded a goal at the back or to get hectic. Of course we also had a bit of luck in crucial phases today.”
