It keeps getting worse…
Before the final preliminary round game of the German handball players at the European Championships against Poland (6 p.m. / ZDF) in Bratislava, five other players tested positive on Monday.
This means that a total of seven players will be absent from the game this Tuesday. After backcourt player Julius Kühn (28), Hendrik Wagner (24), who was nominated for Kühn the day before, also tested positive for the corona virus, as the German Handball Association (DHB) announced on Monday. In the evening then the message from the five other actors.
Affected are Kai Häfner (32), Timo Kastening (26), Lukas Mertens (25), Luca Witzke (22) and Andreas Wolff (30). The five players have gone into isolation in their single rooms.
The DHB is in talks with players and clubs in the Handball Bundesliga and with the European association EHF on the subject of subsequent nominations. Due to the exceptional situation, players outside of the 35 squad reported in December are also possible.
According to BILD information, the DHB has already nominated Fabian Wiede (27) and Paul Drux (26). Both had previously decided not to take part in the European Championships for personal reasons.
Other players from the provisional 35-man squad are to follow. Problem: You would have to be in Bratislava before the throw-off and be able to show a negative test. The fact is: The game will take place – with or without nominated players!
The failures hit the German handball players hard. With two victories, they actually made a perfect start to the European Championship. Now the horror news.
