Handball, 2. Bundesliga: ASV Hamm-Westfalen defeats Gummersbach in the top game – Handball – Sport

“The situations we got out of were good. But at some point the ball has to go into the goal, we weren’t good there.”said Gummerbach coach Torge Greve on “Sky”. “That’s why Hamm deserved to win. If we want to play in the second half of the season, we have to get more points away.”

Storbeck makes Gummersbach despair

In front of more than 7,000 spectators, Sören Südmeier gave the hosts a 1-0 lead after just under three minutes. Gummersbach initially lacked accuracy on the offensive and failed several times due to the strong ASV keeper Felix Storbeck. In the 13th minute, Fabian Huesmann extended Hamm’s lead to three goals for the first time (5-2).

Gummersbach consistently defended and came into the game better, but Storbeck parried two seven meters. Another VfL seven-meter landed on the crossbar, only the fourth attempt was used by Lukas Blohme to score the goal (6: 5/20.). Gummersbach equalized in the 24th minute (7: 7), the break was 10:10.

Hamm is again gaining a head start

At the beginning of the second half Hamm pulled away three goals again (14: 11/35.). Gummersbach often acted unconcentrated in the attack and gave the ball lightly, on the defensive VfL coach Greve called for more aggressiveness during a break. The ASV tried to keep the pace high and led in the 46th minute for the first time with five goals (20:15).

Gummersbach stabilized somewhat and reduced the gap to three goals (19: 22/52.), But failed again and again due to ASV keeper Storbeck (a total of 22 saves). Hamm looked more determined and left nothing to burn in the last few minutes. The best throwers were Vyron Papadopoulos (Hamm) and Alexander Becker (VfL), each with five goals.

Bitter VfL descent in summer

Gummersbach had relegated from the Bundesliga last summer after 53 years. It was dramatic that the tied owls Ludwigshafen were only one goal better than VfL in the end. In the 1970s and 80s, the Westfalenhalle was the living room of the Gummersbachers, who mainly moved to the Ruhr area for European Cup games.
