Hand grenades found in the yard of a Surinamese journalist

Two hand grenades stuck together were found under a car in the yard of the Surinamese journalist Jason Pinas, reports the daily The True Time. The police are investigating the origin of the explosives and the person or persons who placed the grenades under the car. Pinas sees this as an attack and is very concerned for his safety.

The journalist from De Ware Tijd was already in the news two weeks ago when his phone was brutally taken by security officers from Vice President Ronnie Brunswijk.

It happened in front of the parliament building in the capital Paramaribo. Pinas photographed Brunswijk after he got into his car. The vice president was not pleased and a disagreement arose. Pinas was grabbed by a group of security guards. In the end, they also took his phone.

Brunswijk stated in a response that he values press freedom, but that journalists need to know how to behave. “What happened has happened. We have to be honest. Journalists also have their code of ethics,” he said in parliament.

Boycott against Brunswijk

According to the Association of Journalists (SVJ), the action was a violation of press freedom and democracy in Suriname. In response, journalists have launched a boycott against Brunswijk. He will last for at least two months cannot be seen or heard in their messages.

Because, according to the Public Prosecution Service (OM), Pinas was not injured as a result of the action of the security guards, the three suspects were sent away after questioning. The Public Prosecution Service reports, according to the Suriname Herald also that the suspects are prepared to apologize to Pinas.

But he is not satisfied with that and has sent a letter to the Public Prosecution Service with his lawyer. They request further investigation into the matter. They also demand that images of the incident be released.
