People Power Party leader Han Dong-hoon, who celebrated his 100th day in office, emphasized that “in the end, we will follow public sentiment” and “(public sentiment) cannot be defeated” regarding resolving the ‘Kim Kun-hee risk’ such as the appointment of a special inspector. He also put pressure on President Yoon Seok-yeol, who is nearing the turning point of his term, saying, “I can’t go on without doing anything for two years.” Representative Han mentioned that the People Power Party received 61% of the vote in the last by-election for Geumjeong-gu Office in Busan, and drew attention by comparing “the approval rating for our state administration in Busan is 27%.”
At a press conference commemorating the 100th day of his inauguration as party leader held at the National Assembly on the morning of the 30th, Representative Han was asked about the appointment of a special inspector general to resolve the issue of President Yoon Kim Kun-hee, former CEO of Kobana Contents, and responded, “The concerns and concerns regarding the issue of First Lady Kim Kun-hee are important.” “It’s a problem,” he said. “If (the Special Inspector) hesitates even on that, the people will ask, ‘Do you really know how to understand the public sentiment?’ “I will think about it,” he said.
Regarding the differences of opinion between the President’s Office and pro-Yoon faction members within the party over the process of appointing a special inspector, Representative Han said, “If we look at the current government and ruling party as one, it is a process to meet the public’s expectations and follow public sentiment,” and “The government and ruling party is in line with the various public sentiments I mentioned. “I think we will eventually go in that direction (now),” he said, emphasizing his determination.
He also put pressure on President Yoon, who is evaluated as having virtually rejected ‘Kim Kun-hee’s three major demands’, saying, “I think the President’s Office is making an effort to find a path that satisfies the public’s expectations for what we requested, and I expect that to be the case.” “There is only one result: meeting the public’s expectations and following public sentiment.”
In particular, Representative Han drew attention during this process by comparing the People Power Party’s vote rate and the President’s approval rating during the October 16 by-election. Representative Han said, “We received about 61% of the votes in Geumjeong, Busan. I feel a very heavy sense of responsibility. However, in Busan, our (president’s) approval rating for state administration was 27%,” adding, “The gap is very large.”
Representative Han continued, “What the People Power Party appealed to the citizens in Geumjeong was, ‘I will try to change it, so please give me a chance.’” He added, “Public sentiment was very poor. But that promise alone was enough to close the gap of close to 40% (between the party and the government). “He made it.” While the conflict between the party and government continued, he used the difference in approval ratings to claim that ‘public sentiment’ was his. In his pre-prepared opening remarks at the conference, he added meaning by saying, “The October 16 by-election was so big that it felt like a mid-term evaluation of the party leader.”
Regarding the phenomenon of ‘decoupling of party and government’, in which the People Power Party’s approval rating is rising and the President’s approval rating is falling in recent opinion polls, “(Party and government) must be able to coexist. Separation in which only one side has a low approval rating is meaningless. “(The party and government together) must be on the side of the people,” he said.
At the same time, he declared, “The special inspector general must be implemented, and it will be done.” He said, “Let’s solve this problem quickly and move on to the next page.” He also pointed out, “If we don’t do that, how will we win the public’s support?” and “The special inspector said, ‘We will be more careful in the future,’ but are you not going to be careful?”
He also showed a firm attitude when pro-Yoon faction or non-Han faction leaders pointed out that ‘there is a procedural problem’ during the party’s discussion regarding the special investigation. Representative Han said, “I will fully listen to the purpose (of the criticism),” but pointed out, “Many of the complaints about such procedures are about the content (of the facts).”
Representative Han then pointed out, “There are times when you have to jump over a stone bridge to solve a problem and make progress,” and added, “Problems cannot be solved without the courage to take risks and jump over the stone bridge.”
