People Power Party CEO Han Dong-hoon celebrated his 100th day in office on the 30th. In the political world, there is a harsh assessment that the ruling party has not achieved any significant results due to the growing divisions. Following the Yoon-Han conflict, a division within the party occurred, raising voices questioning Representative Han’s ability to control the party. Representative Han was faced with the difficult task of resolving the conflict and also developing a differentiation strategy for future presidential elections.

On the other hand, Lee Jae-myeong, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, appears ‘relaxed’ on the surface. Using the division of the ruling party as good news, he is expanding his reach by visiting people’s livelihood sites and meeting business figures. As he has a relatively wide range of maneuver compared to Representative Han, some analysis suggests that this is a move aimed at winning the presidency in the future. However, the court’s first trial ruling next month is a variable. This is because, depending on the outcome of the sentencing, Representative Lee’s ‘judicial risk’ may hold him back.

Conflict between Korea and North Korea repeated for 100 days… “It’s hard to find a position.”

The past 100 days spent by Han Dong-hoon, CEO of the People Power Party, can be summarized as a repetition of the so-called ‘Yoon-Han conflict’.

At the 7.23 National Convention, he took the position of party leader with an overwhelming vote rate of 62.84% and attempted to differentiate himself by shouting ‘at the level of the people’s eyes’, but there was no clear result, only leading to extreme confrontation with President Yoon Seok-yeol on each issue. For each major issue, such as △Third Party Recommendation, Special Prosecutor Chae Act, △Resolution of legislative conflict, and △Resolution of First Lady Kim Kun-hee’s risks, only conflicts and head-on clashes between the two sides were talked about, and no fundamental solution was realized.

Regarding this, the pro-Yoon group complained that “CEO Han Dong-hoon is not being given space (CEO Jang Dong-hyuk of SBS Radio on the 29th),” and the pro-Yoon group said, “They say they have a 20-year relationship with the president, but they are only openly causing trouble (People Power Party) Officials)” is a situation where criticism is emerging. Even Kim Sang-hoon, chairman of the policy committee appointed by Representative Han, said on YTN radio, “As the representative of the ruling party, I believe that we should have a sense of solidarity and the perception of partners with the Yoon Seok-yeol government and go together.” .

As the factional conflict has intensified without any clear results, even after 100 days since its inauguration, Representative Han’s control of the party is unstable and a series of actions are not gaining momentum. Recently, Representative Han announced that he would directly proceed with the process of recommending candidates for special inspector general, but floor leader Choo Kyung-ho immediately drew a line by saying that it was an ‘in-house issue’, and complaints poured in from the pro-Yoon faction, making it seem like he was unable to persuade the opposition at all.

A key ruling party official pointed out, “Representative Han is the leader in the Republic of Korea when it comes to preemptively launching an attack right before an attack is launched against him,” and added, “It seems he is still unable to escape from being a prosecutor. He has a long way to go before becoming a politician.”

At a press conference on his 100th day in office, Representative Han is expected to focus on the innovation and reform measures of the party and the conservative camp, but more attention is expected to be focused on solutions to party-government conflict and intra-party conflict situations.

There is still work to be done outside of the party. We must achieve results in the upcoming second meeting with Representative Lee. Political circles predict that issues such as the Special Prosecution Act and the introduction of a special inspector general will come up in the talks. From Representative Han’s perspective, while pursuing a strategy of ‘differentiation within the ruling party’, complex higher-order equations must be solved in the process without adding fuel to the conflict within the party.

Lee took advantage of the ‘division of the ruling party’ to meet with senior businessmen and conservatives and set out on a ‘presidential move’… Judicial risk is a ‘variable’

On the other hand, Representative Lee appears relatively more ‘relaxed’ than Representative Han.

According to the Democratic Party, Representative Lee held a public economic meeting with small business owners and self-employed people on this day, and will attend the ‘SK AI Summit 2024’ event held at COEX in Gangnam-gu, Seoul on the 4th of next month. On the 11th of next month, we will continue our ‘economic progress’ by meeting with the Korea Employers Federation and holding a policy meeting. Representative Lee is expected to meet with business leaders to discuss whether to revise the Commercial Act.

We also meet a wide range of political figures. Representative Lee plans to meet with former Minister of Environment Yoon Yeo-jun on the 30th to seek advice on political affairs. Last month, Representative Lee also had a meal with former lawmaker Lee Sang-don and former People Power Party Emergency Response Committee Chairman Kim Jong-in. This is interpreted as an intention to expand the party’s reach by meeting a wide range of conservative and moderate figures. In relation to this, a Democratic Party official explained in a phone call, “The intention is to take steps to support the people’s livelihood for the future presidency while the ruling party is in turmoil.”

This can be interpreted as a strategy to take advantage of the ruling party’s self-destruction and take a ‘wait-and-see approach’ for the time being. In the case of introducing a special inspector, this was an agenda originally proposed by the Democratic Party, but as it became controversial within the ruling party, they kept quiet, saying, ‘The People Power Party’s position is important.’ Yoon Jong-gun, floor spokesperson of the Democratic Party, met with reporters the day before and drew the line, saying, “To talk about a special inspector general, which can only be a proactive and preventive measure, is treading water.”

At the same time, there appears to be an intention to benefit from the division of the ruling party. The intention is to increase division in the ruling party by pulling Representative Han to the Democratic Party. It appears that this was based on the judgment that if Representative Han cooperated with the special prosecution of Ms. Kim, President Yoon Seok-yeol could be isolated. Kim Yong-min, senior vice leader for floor policy of the Democratic Party, suggested at a meeting the previous day, “I hope (Representative Han) will not leisurely advocate for a special inspector general, but will actively participate in the passage of the Kim Kun-hee Special Prosecutor Act.”

As part of this, there is no reason for the Democratic Party to postpone the second meeting between the ruling and opposition parties. Rather, it is judged that it would be better to shake things up with a special prosecutor before the ruling party gathers its opinions on whether to introduce a special inspector general. Regarding the schedule for the second meeting, the Democratic Party’s position is, ‘We asked to meet as soon as possible, but Representative Han has not responded.’

However, Representative Lee’s ‘judicial risk’ is the biggest obstacle to his path to the presidency. Representative Lee is scheduled to be sentenced in the first trial on charges of violating the Public Official Election Act on the 15th of next month, and in the case of instigation of perjury on the 25th of the same month. Although there is optimism within the party, there are also concerns that the outcome of the sentencing could hinder Representative Lee’s path to the presidency.
