Hamtramck, First US City to Have an All-Muslim Government

HAMTRAMCK – Hamtramck is considered to be the first known city in United States of America (USA) with an entirely Muslim government.

According to the Muslim Public Affairs Council, which was reported by CNN, Monday (12/20/2021), they have no record of such a government other than Hamtramck.

In the 99 years since its founding, every mayor of Hamtramck has been a Polish American. It ends next January 2, in Hamtramck’s 100th year, when Amer Ghalib will be sworn in as mayor, along with the all-Muslim city council.

For decades, Hamtramck was known as Michigan’s “Little Warsaw,” a city of just two square miles of dense homes and factories a long way from downtown Detroit.

Polish Cardinal Karol Wojtyla visited once, in 1969, before he became Pope John Paul II.

The statue of Wojtyla, arms outstretched, still looms over what is now Pope Park, where a large mural of Polish folk dancers stretches almost the entire city block.

The mayor-elect Ghalib was born in Yemen and came to the United States alone as a young man, with a bit of broken English. He is now 42 years old, works in the medical field and is studying to become a doctor.

Hamtramck’s heyday seems to have passed. The city is rotting. Many factories have closed. Many second- and third-generation Polish Americans have moved to suburban Detroit and beyond in the last two decades.

Immigrants, mostly from Yemen and Bangladesh, replaced them and Hamtramck, locals say, is now predominantly Muslim.
