Hamster Racing: The Adrenaline-Fueled Sport Taking the Crypto World by Storm

There is no exact definition of a degen, but sometimes they can be described as gamblers who try their luck at every stupid thing that they know is nonsense, but hope that its price will skyrocket and they will sell in time. But perhaps a better description would be that the right degen likes adenalin. Lots of adrenaline. Just go “all-in” several times during the day.

But what is such an adrenaline-hungry degen to do in the middle of summer, when the mania around memecoins is already in decline like the frog PEPE and the markets are a bit boring? So you have to create something. Cryptodegens therefore took up a new sport: hamster racing.

And it is quite simple. The interested party visits the page hamsters.gg and there he sees the countdown to the next race. There are usually up to sixteen of them per day. He then bets and hopes.

It all consists of four plastic boxes, each with one hamster, which is watched by a webcam. Just before the start, the countdown will start and after that the door to the runway will open and the hamsters should run out. Whichever of them completes a route a few tens of centimeters long first, wins.

Most of the time it turns out that (at least according to the three races that the author of the text watched) a maximum of two will run and the other two are still sniffing the walls of their box. Well, of the two, one cuts/turns somewhere in the middle and only one finishes.

But that’s not the point. After all, the point is that you can bet on all possible outcomes. If you have experience with crypto, it’s actually very simple. You just need to have a few dollars on BNB Chain (formerly Binance Smart Chain), connect your MetaMask or another wallet and bet from two to a few hundred dollars.

On average, it is now said to be over five thousand dollars per race, and this number is still growing, bringing the total amount closer to two million dollars a day. The trend is only a few days old, and if you follow the usual trajectory of similar meme projects, you can expect that the amount will skyrocket for a few days/weeks, but in a month nobody will be interested in hamsters.

But today they still arouse a lot of passion. For example, the community got mad at the hamster CK, who had 328 losses and only eight wins. There were even calls for the owners to spend it.

Other users complained that the whole thing is a scam, that there are far fewer hamsters than the developers advertise, and that the same four are still spinning. And that some races are just records of the previous ones. The authors denied this and promised to jump to the pet store for other competitors.

It wouldn’t be the Wild West of the Crypt if the hamster races didn’t also create a new token. The platform takes five percent from bets and four fifths of that goes to the holders of this token. It’s called HAMS and it’s been through a proper memerode since it was released on Thursday. It first jumped tenfold on Thursday from 29 cents to almost three dollars. It subsequently fell below a dollar, was over three dollars again on Sunday, and now (around noon on Monday) stands at 61 cents. It’s a ride.

And finally, we would like to add the author’s recommendation: Similar tokens are extremely risky and you should never invest your money in them. Leave them to the degens. Some (dogecoin, shiba-inu) caught on, but 99 percent of them made money for only a few people and the vast majority of their owners lost their pants on them.

With the hamsters, it remains to be seen whether the project will be sustained or will have a short life like other similar craziness in the crypt. As with everything in this field, however, a number of copied projects are already trying to make money from it. CoinGecko.com has already created a special list with tokens of animal racing projects. New ones keep coming, depending on who has what at home. For now, you can bet on rabbits, snails or rats, for example, in addition to hamsters.
