The captain of the Slovak national team Marek Hamšík will play for IFK Göteborg after leaving the Chinese league. The former star of Naples signed a contract with the Swedish club by the end of August. The 33-year-old midfielder wants to gain gaming practice in Gothenburg before the Summer European Championships.
Hamšík negotiated a return to Slovan Bratislava, which he withdrew from. In the end, the best Slovak player of the last decade agreed on an engagement with the 18 – time Swedish champion, who is waiting for another title from 2007.
“From the first contact, we understood each other, they see things the same way we do,” said IFK Gothenburg sports director Pontus Farnerud. “Marek has a great motivation to prove something here. Thanks to his skills, charisma and passion, he is an exceptional player,” added.
Hamšík has been working abroad since 2004, when he left for Brescia, Italy. He made a name for himself in Naples, where he played in 2007-2019, was captain and became a club record holder in the number of matches played and goals scored. Two years ago, he went to the Chinese club Dalian Professional.
