Hampus Wanne misses handball’s Olympic qualifier: “Needed at home”

Wanne was named the tournament’s best left six when Sweden took a sensational World Cup silver earlier this year.

When the national handball team now faces three important Olympic qualifying matches in three days, they will have to do without the 27-year-old, who has left the squad for personal reasons.

– It feels really hard not to be able to play the Olympic qualifier that I had been looking forward to for so long, but as the situation is right now, I need more at home, says Wanne to the national handball team’s website.

He gets full support from national team captain Glenn Solberg.

– I would have made exactly the same choice in this situation. There are more important things in life than handball. We will do the best we can in this situation and not only play for Sweden but also for Hampus, says Solberg.

Emil Mellegård replaces Wanne in the squad, although Lucas Pellas is expected to gain the confidence from the start as a left winger. HSV Wetzlar professional Mellegård went to Berlin on Friday and after testing negative for covid-19, he was able to join the team ten minutes before leaving for the match arena.

The match against Germany starts at 15.15. Sweden then meets Algeria on Saturday and Slovenia on Sunday. The first and second in the group go to the Olympics.
