To keep him from drugs, his mother, desperate, went so far as to take the keys from his house and close the door. But the only thing he managed to do was infuriate his son, Nuno Sousa, 39, a hashish, heroin and cocaine consumer since he was 22. One night in October 2018, he waited for Maria Alice, 74, to fall asleep, in the house where both lived in Santarinho, Viseu, and he beat her to death with a hammer. He has now been sentenced in the court of Viseu to 21 years in prison.

“The accused revealed a total and absolute indifference regarding the value of human life”, wrote the judges in the judgment, classifying Nuno Sousa’s behavior towards his mother as “immeasurable cruelty”. And without the defendant showing, throughout the process and the trial, any signs of regret. The conviction included two more crimes of theft, related to two storming robberies committed after murdering his mother.
