The German hopeful did not make it to the final. The new Olympic champion is Ethan Katzberg.
Paris (SID) – Germany’s hammer throw hope Merlin Hummel was unable to participate in the medal ceremony at the Summer Olympics in Paris. The European Championship fourth-place finisher from Rome took tenth place in the decision at the Stade de France with 76.03 m, the podium was around three meters away.
Ethan Katzberg won Canada’s first ever Olympic victory in the hammer throw. The world champion was unbeatable with 84.12 m. Silver went to Hungarian World Championship bronze medalist Bence Halasz (79.97) ahead of Ukrainian Mychajlo Kochan (79.39). Olympic champion Wojciech Nowicki (Poland) had to settle for seventh place (77.42).
Hummels’ qualifying competition on Friday caused a stir. After his strong first attempt, he had to wait around half an hour for his distance because the measuring device had apparently not been operated correctly. The 75.25 m recorded later was enough to take one of the twelve places in the final.
