FT Freiburg – Hammelburg Volleys (Saturday, 8 p.m.)
After a weekend without games, the league champions from Hammelburg (1/9 points) are off on one of the longest trips out of the season: to Freiburg, 380 kilometers away. The previous record of the Breisgauer (10/4 points) reads rather mixed: In four games the team of head coach Jakob Schnhagen could only win the game against Delitzsch, while strong Mimmenhusern only had to admit defeat in the tiebreak. Only the 1: 3 defeat in Leipzig seems a bit surprising.
At its core, the “Affenbande” stayed together, which means that a well-rehearsed team is waiting for the people of Saale. Almost traditional, the Breisgau troop consists of a mix of perspective players and experienced rabbits such as FT captain Marcus Gensitz or diagonal attacker Dominic Salomon. The Finnish setter Mauri Kurrpa and the mighty Pole Mateusz Lysikowski have left the club. Sebastian Dinges from the TG Mainz-Gonsenheim came for the Finn and Malachi Murch, an Australian national player, was signed in the floodplain attack.
Volleys team manager Olly Wendt knows that the previous season of both teams has not played a major role in the duel in Breisgau: “There has not been a single game in the past few years in which the table position was of any relevance. Games against Freiburg are always something very special . ” In the previous season, the Baden-Wrttemberger won in the Hammelburg living room in the tie-break, while the Saalestdter also returned the favor in Freiburg with a five-set success.
It remains to be seen, of course, whether the hosts will not let some corns in their Friday game against the surprise team of the league, the Volley Youngstars from Friedrichshafen. “Against us, the Freiburgers will mobilize every nano-crumb of energy reserves with a consistently high level of motivation,” believes Wendt. The game can be followed as usual via livestream (sportdeutschland.tv).sow
