Hamme Woman’s Mother’s Grave Targeted by Vandal 15 Times: Police Close in on Suspect

The grave of Martine’s mother from Hamme has already been targeted by a vandal 15 times. The funeral dates back more than 4 years ago, when the vandalism started immediately. “The day after my mother was buried, all the flowers on her grave were thrown around. Prayer cards on her grave had disappeared and we found them torn,” says Martine.

The vandalism continued, up to 15 times already. “The drawings that great-grandchildren made are torn up and flowers or plants on the grave are destroyed,” says Martine. “I think it is always the same person, because the method is always the same. Strangely enough, the other graves remain untouched.”

Martine received an agreement from the police to install a wildlife camera (a camera with sensors that record movements in a certain place, ed.). With results: at the beginning of this week, the images showed how the perpetrator, a woman, pulls out flowers and sprinkles them with salt. “I don’t recognize her, but I hope she can be caught quickly. I am angry and I especially want to know why she is doing this.”

An investigation is currently underway and the local police have already drawn up several reports. The police do not want to say whether they now have the perpetrator in their sights.
