Hammarby vs HJK Match Analysis: Lack of Creativity and Carelessness Leads to 2-1 Loss

So was the match

Hammarby had most of the ball in the first half, but had difficulty creating chances. After three minutes it could have been a good chance. Viktor Djukanovic came straight towards HJK’s penalty area and should have poked the ball straight to August Mikkelsen who took a good run and the depth and had been completely free. But instead Djukanovic tried to go himself, and lost the ball.

After 19 minutes Djukanovic passed. The winger hit a cross from the left that reached Jusef Erabi in front of the goal, but the header was not hard and Elmo Henriksson was able to pick the ball down easily.

Bajen’s best chance came after 37 minutes. HJK were careless in their own penalty area and passed straight to Erabi, who struck out to the right where Tesfaldet Tekie was. He hit a nice cross along the ground, but Marcus Rafferty and Djukanovic couldn’t get there.

Hammarbys liked to pass around the ball centrally, but a few times they got rid of it, including Oscar Johansson Schellhas, Djukanovic and Shaquille Pinas so that the opponent could counter.

Abdelrahman Boudah tried a shot from outside, Mads Fenger tried a header on a corner.

It took 62 minutes before Hammarby scored 1-0. On punishment. Oscar Johansson Schellhas opened up the game when he found Mikkelsen upright and with speed. Mikkelsen’s first touch was weak and he lost control, but completed the run and was brought down. Fenger made it 1-0.

Nine minutes later it was 1-1. Topi Keskinen got the ball deep, Markus Karlsson and Pavle Vagic didn’t have time, and the finish was cold.

After 80 minutes, the away team scored 2-1. After weak defensive play by Hammarby, Kevin Kouassivi-Benissan fell after a duel with Fenger. Keskinen scored his second goal of the match.

In the 94th minute, Bajen should have made it 2-2 when Djukanovic hit a good cross to Pinas who got free – but shot wide.

Hammarby’s team: Dovin – Vagic, Fenger (Llinares 84), Pinas – Strand (Karlsson 67), Rafferty (Boudah 55), Johansson Schellhas, Tekie, Djukanovic – Mikkelsen (Hammar 76) – Erabi

Higher demands on Hammarby’s duo
There was a lot of carelessness and weak focus in Hammarby. On multiplayer. Expectations are quite high for Viktor Djukanovic, who was chased by several foreign clubs before the transfer window closed, and for Oscar Johansson Schellhas, who has been handpicked by coach Kim Hellberg. Considering the expectations, their performance against HJK was not good enough. Djukanovic seemed to think about himself more than the team, was often selfish and assessed poorly, especially in the first half. Once he judged well and tried to think of the team more than himself, 94 minutes had passed, but by then it should have been 2-2 when he set Pinas free.

Johansson Schellhas was up and down. On the plus side was when he opened up the game and found Mikkelsen upright and with speed before the 1-0 goal. On the minus side, there were some sloppy touches that allowed HJK to break and counter, some marking misses and some sloppy passes, like at the beginning of the second half when he played hard in his own penalty area so it was punishing.

It wasn’t just these two players who were careless. Pinas started the match well, but after a while the percentage of errors in the passing game became too high and then there was a lot of ups and downs for him as well.

THE EVENT OF THE MATCH
Simon Strand held Atomu Tanaka by the neck for several seconds just outside his own penalty area. Even though the ball wasn’t nearby. The referee could do nothing but blow a free kick in a dangerous position for HJK. Not smart by Strand. The free kick went into the wall and into the corner.

THE QUESTION MARK
How will Hammarby get better at threatening and creating chances without Nahir Besara? Against HJK, Bajen didn’t scare many. It got a little better in the second half, but not good enough. Besara is important for Bajen and was in the last two matches (4-5 against Sarpsborg and 2-3 against Bodö) but was missing when it was 0-0 against Diosgyöri and 1-2 against HJK. The home team had a lot of the ball, but difficult to create. It doesn’t matter that much if you play 20 quick and short passes in the middle, if you can’t manage to be good in the last third.

PLAYER OF THE MATCH
3:
Pavle Vagic. Good and calm with the ball and in the passing game. Often found teammates on their feet with straight forward passes.

2: The tea fold Tekie. Good in the short passing game and came close to getting an assist after a nice play down the ground.

1: Simon Strand. Good attitude and clean on its edge. Leading 1-0 when he stepped off.
