Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari Test takes a Dramatic Turn with Crash at Catalonia Circuit
Lewis Hamilton’s transition to Ferrari has hit an unexpected snag. The seven-time Formula 1 World Champion crashed the 2023 SF-23 during a private test at the Catalonia Circuit on January 29, 2025. The incident occurred in the final sector of the track, where Hamilton reportedly lost control of the car and collided with a tire barrier.
While Hamilton emerged unscathed and exited the vehicle on his own, the SF-23 sustained meaningful damage, including suspension and aerodynamic component failures. The cause of the crash remains undisclosed, but Ferrari’s test overseer, Jerome Dambrosio, has already analyzed the telemetry data and completed initial evaluations. This accident disrupted Ferrari’s testing schedule, which originally included Charles Leclerc driving the car in the afternoon.Instead, test drivers Antonio Giovinazzi and Dino Veganovic are set to take over for the final day of testing on Thursday, though the schedule may be adjusted further due to the incident.
A Rocky Start to Hamilton’s Ferrari Journey
This crash marks a challenging start to Hamilton’s tenure with Ferrari, following his move from Mercedes after 12 years. It’s not the first time Hamilton has faced setbacks during pre-season testing with a new team. In January 2007, he experienced a high-speed crash in Valencia ahead of his F1 debut with McLaren. Similarly,he crashed on the first day of testing in Jerez after joining Mercedes. The Catalonia test is part of Hamilton’s adaptation program to familiarize himself with Ferrari’s machinery and team dynamics. Earlier this season, Ferrari conducted its first TPC (Testing of Previous Cars) at the Fiorano Circuit, where Hamilton also drove the SF-23.
Stricter Testing Regulations in 2025
This season, the FIA has tightened TPC rules, limiting teams to a total of 1,000 km per season with regular drivers. The Barcelona test, however, is a private session aimed at helping Hamilton acclimate to his new environment.
Following this week’s test, Ferrari will participate in a two-day Pirelli tire test on the same circuit. The team will use the 2024 SF-24, which secured five wins last season, with modifications to simulate 2026 regulations.
What’s next for Hamilton and Ferrari?
Hamilton is scheduled to conduct a shakedown of the 2025 Ferrari at Fiorano on February 19, followed by a day and a half of pre-season testing in Bahrain on February 26. These sessions will be crucial as Hamilton prepares for his debut season with the iconic Italian team.
