Hamilton made no secret of his desire to stay in F1, but negotiations regarding the length of the contract and the gauge dragged on. This was not published, but a few months ago there was speculation about an offer from Ferrari, which wanted to give Hamilton 46 million euros per year (over a billion crowns).
“It was a clear decision to continue with our rider line-up. We have the strongest pairing on the grid and both drivers play a key role in the team that drives us forward. It was always more of a formality for Lewis and I to move on together. His qualities are illustrated by breathtaking results,” said Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff.
Having won six of his seven titles as a Mercedes driver, Hamilton also has a record 103 victories, although he has now been waiting for more than a year and a half. This is the longest break in his career and proves that Mercedes has been chasing the dominant Red Bull in vain in the last two seasons.
“Being at the top doesn’t happen overnight or in a moment, but it takes determination and hard work. And I’m honored to make history with this incredible team,” said Hamilton. “We learned from every success, but also from every failure. We keep chasing our dreams, we keep fighting and we will win again.”
