Hamilton won the Turkish GP qualification, why does he start 11th?

British driver Lewis Hamilton won the qualification for the Turkish Grand Prix of Formula 1 cars, but due to the penalty for changing the engine, he will start the race from the eleventh place. Pole position will be taken by his teammate from Mercedes Valtteri Bottas, who drove the second time, and will be joined in the front row by the third Max Verstappen from Red Bull today.

Fin Bottas, who will leave for Alfa Romeo after the season and will be replaced by George Russell from Williams, finished 19th in his career position. On the track in Istanbul, he was 130 thousandths of a second behind Hamilton and confirmed that Mercedes is doing well on this track. In addition to qualifying, the “Silver Arrows” also dominated Friday’s practice.

The reigning champion Hamilton will defend the two-point lead in the race at the head of the World Cup over Verstappen from an unfavorable position. He had a certain penalty since Friday, when he put a new internal combustion engine into training. However, since he did not change the entire power unit, but only one part, he received a milder penalty in the form of a ten-seat transfer. Carlos Sainz of Ferrari, on the other hand, received the maximum penalty for replacing the engine, which starts the race from the tail of the field. His teammate Charles Leclerc will start third.

Both AlphaTauri pilots also fit into the top ten. Pierre Gasly starts fourth, Júki Cunoda ninth.

Surprisingly, Daniel Ricciardo did not advance from the first part of the qualification, finishing 16th with McLaren. Mick Schumacher, on the other hand, was happy for the Haas team, who started the race in 14th place.

The Turkish Grand Prix will start on Sunday at 14:00 CEST.
