It is just a fairy tale that he would be wrong with the younger world champion, who only did what he had to do in 2021. Lewis Hamilton is no longer sure that it is the other way around.
The events of the 2021 season, and finally the season finale, left their mark on the relationship between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen: the two world champions do not have a good relationship according to public opinion, which is supported by their occasional cynical expressions, Verstappen recently made a statement about it, for examplefor some reason he never collides with others during the battle, but he and Hamilton regularly collide, as recently in Brazil.
It is surprising in light of the history, but the seven-time champion claims that he actually has no problem with the Red Bull pilot: “People like to talk about us having problems with each other. These are fairy tales. I respect him,” said Hamilton in the interview he gave to the Dutch Formula 1 Magazine.
“He did everything he needed to do in 2021, so what’s wrong with him? He performed well and brought results all weekend, that cannot be taken away from him,” he said about Verstappen being driven by his hunger for success, and that’s why he can’t be angry with him. However, he added:
“He’s much younger, so maybe he has a problem with me. But you can’t be sure, so I’d rather assume there isn’t. I can’t speak on his behalf,” Hamilton concluded the interview diplomatically.
Verstappen also respects Hamilton
In the above-mentioned speech, where Max Verstappen spoke about the collisions with each other, the Dutchman emphasized that he also has respect for his rival who is 13 years older.
“Because in England, they can easily interpret this as criticism, and then they take him out for it. I’ve always had a lot of respect for Lewis for what he’s achieved in the sport, but that’s why I don’t understand why we can’t compete with him like the others. Of course, everyone has a different attitude. I know that Charles, for example, is a little different than George or Carlos or Checo or whoever. I have to be careful, because many times they understand this as criticism, and then they start to hate me for it, even though this is not my intention,” said Verstappen.
