British driver Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) set the fastest time in the second free practice session of the Italian Grand Prix, the 16th round of 24 in the F1 World Championship, this Friday at the Monza circuit.
On a track that recorded temperatures of up to 45 degrees, the seven-time world champion beat his compatriot Lando Norris (McLaren) and the Spaniard Carlos Sainz (Ferrari), while Max Verstappen (Red Bull) had to settle for 14th place. The Mexican Sergio Pérez, again having problems behind the wheel, finished in 15th.
Seventh in the first session hours earlier, Hamilton set the best time by just 3 thousandths of a second.
After the first session was interrupted by an accident involving Italian rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes), it was this time Dane Kevin Magnussen (Haas) who brought out the red flag and suspended the session for about ten minutes following another off-track excursion.
Australian Oscar Piastri (McLaren) was fourth, just ahead of the second Ferrari of Monegasque Charles Leclerc, supported by the ‘Scuderia’ fans on the Italian track.
The British George Russell (Mercedes), the German Nico Hülkenberg (Haas), the Australian Daniel Ricciardo (Racing Bulls) and the two Aston Martins of the Spanish veteran Fernando Alonso and the Canadian Lance Stroll.
Verstappen, who was unable to put in his fastest lap on soft tyres, was 14th, 0.872 seconds behind Hamilton.
