Christian Horner, director of the Red Bull team competing in the Formula 1 World Championship, said that representatives of British Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time world champion, contacted his team and Ferrari before the latter signed his new contract with his Mercedes team.
British news agency PA Media reported that Hamilton, 38, renewed his contract for two years last August, so that he would continue with Mercedes until he reached 40 years old.
Speculation spread about Hamilton’s future for most of the season, and the Red Bull team manager said that Hamilton’s representatives contacted the team, before the seven-time world champion renewed his contract with Mercedes. Horner added in statements to the British newspaper “Daily Mail”: “We have been in talks over the years with Lewis Hamilton to join us.”
He said: “They contacted us several times, the last of which was early this year. There was an inquiry about whether there was any interest.”
“He met with John Elkann (Ferrari president) as well, and I think they were serious conversations,” Horner said. He explained: “I cannot see Max and Louis working together. The dynamic will not be right. We are 100% happy with what we have.”
The 2023 Formula 1 season ends this week in Abu Dhabi, which is the place where Hamilton lost during the last race of the 2021 season, and was won by the Dutchman Max Verstappen. Hamilton ends the season in third place, while the Dutchman tries to win the 19th race this season in Record-breaking campaign.
