Hamburg’s Senator for Culture Carsten Brosda congratulated director Ilker Catak and his team on the Oscar nomination for the film “The Teacher’s Room” shot in Hamburg. “The outstanding Hamburg production is rightly moving into the international spotlight,” said the SPD politician on Tuesday, according to the statement. “In the microcosm of school, this film deals with the really big themes: it’s about prejudice and condemnation, about power and powerlessness, about guilt and justice.” Now he’s keeping his fingers crossed for the award ceremony in March, Brosda continued. The 96th Academy Awards are scheduled for March 10 at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood.

“The Teacher’s Room,” starring Leonie Benesch (“Babylon Berlin”), is one of five films nominated for the “Best International Film” category. Also on the list is Wim Wenders, who is competing for Japan with “Perfect Days”. In addition to Germany and Japan, three other countries are represented in the “International Feature Film” division: Italy (“Io Capitano”), Great Britain (“The Zone of Interest”) and Spain (“The Snow Company”).
In “The Teacher’s Room” Benesch plays the role of a Hamburg teacher. When one of her students is said to have stolen, she investigates the matter herself – and threatens to destroy her ideals and the school system. According to the Moin Film Fund, the film by Hamburg Media School graduate Ilker Catak was shot entirely in Hamburg. It celebrated its world premiere at the Berlinale 2023. The script comes from Catak and Johannes Duncker. The production was supported with 390,000 euros from the Moin Film Fund.
