Hamburg Towers: Pedro Calles is the new coach – basketball

The Hamburg Towers have a new trainer. Spaniard Pedro Calles (36) leaves Bundesliga competitor Rasta Vechta after five years and signed until 2022.

“Pedro was the absolute candidate, we are very pleased with the agreement,” says Towers Managing Director Marvin Willoughby. There was a last personal meeting on Wednesday – after that everything was clear. “I think Pedro combines all the skills it takes to achieve our goals together, to establish ourselves in the league. He has the strength to get everything out of his players and has proven over the past two seasons that he is an above average BBL coach. ”

It was only last fall that the coach of the year 2019 also extended his contract in Vechta until 2022. An exit clause now made the change possible. For this, however, the towers have to pay a transfer fee, which should amount to around 80,000 euros.

Success coach Calles has only been a boss for two years. Previously, he worked his way up from an athletic trainer to an assistant manager. “The five years in Vechta were the best of my life,” says the Andalusian. “Now I’m looking forward to a new challenge in Hamburg.”

The studied sports scientist from Cordoba brings his family with him. His wife Ana is a veterinarian, plus son Juan (almost two) and eight-month-old Carlotta.

After the most important personnel have been clarified, Calles and Willoughby are now starting to put the team together. Next week the new one will be in Hamburg next time.

As of now, the Towers only have five men under contract – all of them additional players or talents: Jannik Freese (33), Justus Hollatz (19), Kevin Yebo (24) as well as the double licensees Jürgen Rich (21) and Leif Möller (17).

The supports in Vechta for Calles included the German-American Maximilian DiLeo (27) and Josh Young (32 / USA). The contracts of both have expired. But it is quite possible that Vechta now wants to keep her herself after the farewell of her coach …

It is also unclear whether the upcoming BBL season will actually start in mid-September as planned. League boss Stefan Holz: “We cannot play economically without spectators, or we get state aid to compensate for this. If we don’t touch the mode, we have to start in mid-October at the latest. ”
