Hamburg / Telekom: fiber optics for 540,000 households | Commune21

[3.6.2021] Deutsche Telekom is adding a giant leap in its fiber optic offensive in Hamburg. The company plans to supply 540,000 households with fiber optic connections by the end of 2025.

By the end of 2025, Deutsche Telekom plans to equip 540,000 households in the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg with fiber optic connections right into the house (FTTH). This makes Hamburg the second largest contiguous expansion area for Telekom in Germany after Berlin, the company reports. The starting shot has now been given in the Hamburg district of Alsterdorf. “These days, access to fast Internet is part of the general interest for citizens and companies, as is connection to the water, electricity and sewage network,” says Hamburg’s First Mayor Peter Tschentscher. “Good data connections are a prerequisite for social participation, for modern working life and the competitiveness of our economy. Hamburg is already the state with the best broadband coverage in Germany. The Hamburg data network is being expanded further with Deutsche Telekom’s fiber optic offensive. Thousands of households can get a direct fiber optic connection for the first time. This is an important step on the way to the digital future of the Hanseatic City of Hamburg. “

Fiber doesn’t come by itself

“The people of Hamburg now have the chance to use the fast Internet directly in their house or apartment. A high-performance fiber optic connection offers all options for digital applications such as working and learning from home as well as simultaneous video streaming of the highest quality, ”says Hagen Rickmann, member of the management team at Telekom Deutschland. “A very important point in the FTTH expansion: The fiber optic connection does not come into houses and apartments by itself. For this we need the help of customers, landlords and homeowners. We lay the fiber optics from the street to the buildings and then have to move on to the houses and apartments. But that doesn’t work without the approval of the owners and landlords ”.

Existing infrastructure as the basis

In Hamburg, according to its own information, Telekom has mostly found favorable conditions, as extensive empty pipe systems exist in large parts of the city. This significantly minimizes construction site noise and traffic restrictions. “Laying thousands of fiber optic kilometers and setting up hundreds of network distributors cannot be carried out without construction sites. Construction sites are almost always a nuisance for citizens. That is why we work very closely with the Hamburg district offices and the responsible authorities in the Senate, ”says Borislav Tadic, Head of Technology North at Telekom. “Transparency and professional construction site management are the top priority in our expansion, in order to keep the impairments as low as possible for the people of Hamburg.” For the company it is very clear: the ambitious expansion goals cannot be achieved alone. Digitization is a team sport – which is why Telekom relies on unbureaucratic expansion using alternative methods and digital approval processes.

Different stages of expansion

Telekom is currently building in Alsterdorf and in the northern part of Winterhude. The first 30,000 or so households could now order fast fiber optic products. The construction work would focus on laying the conduits to the houses and buildings. Once the necessary permits have been obtained from the owners and landlords, the individual fiber optic cables would be laid in the conduits in the houses and buildings. In 2022 it will continue with around 60,000 households in the following districts of Hamburg: in the southern part of Winterhude with the areas Goldbek-Nord and Jarrestadt, Eppendorf Süd and Kellinghusenstraße, in the north of Hoheluft-Ost, Harvestehude and in the east of Lokstedt and Bergedorf. The expansion areas from 2023 are currently still being planned. (co)
