Crisis here, euphoria there: In the 2nd league, the giants Hamburger SV and Schalke 04 are taking very different paths.
Schalke 04’s crisis is getting even worse, Hamburger SV is storming to the top of the table: the giants of the 2nd division are taking very different paths in the still young season. After the dismissal of Thomas Reis, Schalke lost without a chance 1:3 (0:1) at SC Paderborn, the greatly improved HSV pushed league leaders Fortuna Düsseldorf out of first place with a euphorically cheered 1:0 (0:0).
The battered people of Gelsenkirchen, on the other hand, continue to wait for salvation. Under the interim duo of Matthias Kreutzer and club legend Mike Büskens, the fifth defeat of the season was absolutely deserved, Schalke remains 16th for the time being. After the game, Schalke fans threw cups towards their own team.
Former Schalke player Felix Platte (43′) and Florent Muslija (53′, penalty kick/76′) scored, the Royal Blues remained harmless except for Yusuf Kabadayi’s consolation goal (90’+9). It is not yet clear who will lead the traditional club to direct promotion again. The former European Cup regular had Reis released on Wednesday.
Sports director Peter Knäbel said the situation was “stuck both in terms of people and content”. Sports director Andre Hechelmann once again explained to Sky that he was following a clear plan and that he was searching: so far without results. The club is aiming for a long-term solution.
HSV leads the table after winning the top game
HSV doesn’t have any such problems; it convincingly brushed off any talk of a crisis on Friday evening. However, it was a late penalty goal from Laszlo Benes (83′) that brought victory. “We were very disciplined and patient. The more active team deserved to win,” said coach Tim Walter on Sky.
After defeats against the relegated VfL Osnabrück and SV Elversberg, HSV had the top game for the club’s 136th anniversary in the almost sold-out Volksparkstadion. “The Dino can also do great cinema,” said trainer Tim Walter. Former HSV coach Daniel Thioune, on the other hand, warned his Fortuna “against Hamburg’s maximally dominant” game; he surprisingly sorted his team into a 4-5-1 formation without a nominal striker.
HSV was awake, aggressive and superior in the first half. However, bigger opportunities remained rare: only Bakery Jatta (16th) had one, he headed wide of the goal from very close range. After 30 passive minutes, Fortuna could have taken the lead with a double chance from Felix Klaus (35th). Thioune clasped his hands above his head.
The Fortuna remained defensive in the northern wind and rain, but defended compactly and also looked ahead. Nevertheless, they needed luck: goalkeeper Florian Kastenmeier directed a sharp free kick from Miro Muheim (56th) onto the post and also saved from Robert Glatzel after the following corner.
The HSV pressure increased – goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes had no problems with a shot from Isak Johannesson (60th). Yellow-red for Matthias Zimmermann (76th) was the turning point: Shortly afterwards, Emmanuel Iyoha fouled Benes in the penalty area. HSV celebrated – Schalke remains at a loss.
