On today’s Remembrance Day, the victims of war and violence are remembered throughout Germany. A wreath-laying ceremony is planned at the Neuengamme concentration camp memorial in Hamburg. The central memorial hour takes place in the main church of St. Michaelis.

In Hamburg, the victims of war and violence are commemorated today at the Neuengamme Concentration Camp Memorial, among other places. Citizenship President Carola Veit (SPD) will lay a wreath there. Karin van Steeg is also there. 14 men from the van Steeg family were arrested in the Netherlands in 1944 and taken from there to the Neuengamme concentration camp.

Remembering euthanasia victims

At midday at the Asklepios Klinik Nord, Hamburg’s mayor Peter Tschentscher (SPD) remembered all those patients from the former Ochsenzoll psychiatric hospital who were deported during the Nazi era. 3,755 of them were sent to their deaths as part of the Nazi euthanasia program. A wreath-laying ceremony is also planned there.

Central memorial hour in the Michel

At the Ohlsdorf cemetery, the Hamburg police mourn colleagues who were killed in the line of duty. Interior Senator Andy Grote (SPD) gives a speech to commemorate the victims. In the main church of St. Michaelis there will be a central memorial hour for Remembrance Day from 2 p.m., including with Mayor Tschentscher.
