The results of the “SKL Major City Ranking 2023” study, led by the Faculty of Economics and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Freiburg, show that the happiest people in Germany live in Hamburg and the unhappiest in Leipzig.
The residents of 12 major cities (Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Cologne, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Düsseldorf, Leipzig, Dresden, Hanover, Bremen, Essen) were asked about their life satisfaction. The reasons for this satisfaction were also asked. The last two cities, Dresden (11th place) and Leipzig (12th place), both have a slightly older population and comparatively weak economic figures. The people of Dresden are dissatisfied with their income. This is reflected in their purchasing power and a high proportion of so-called “top-ups” as well as in many housing benefit households. Health and family life are also underperforming. However, the people of Dresden are above average satisfied with their city. 63 percent would recommend a friend to move there. No other city scored higher here.
According to the study, the satisfaction of the people of Leipzig with their income is even lower than in Dresden – Leipzig is not a particularly attractive business location for them. But personal dissatisfaction is also high when it comes to health and living conditions. However, the people of Leipzig are quite satisfied with their city: 51 percent would recommend an acquaintance to move to Leipzig.
Overall, the researchers found that the level of income, personal health, the feeling of togetherness of the citizens and the work of the public administration are particularly important for the satisfaction of the citizens with their city. In general, it can also be seen that the happier a city is, the more optimistic its citizens are about the future. And: If they are satisfied with their own lives, then they also rate their satisfaction with the city positively.
