Hamburg: Port of Hamburg: World’s largest car transporter visits for the first time

As of: October 22, 2024 6:47 p.m

On Tuesday night, a new giant of ocean shipping moored in the port of Hamburg. It is the world’s largest ship-car transporter “Höegh Aurora”, which is currently making its maiden voyage.

The freighter belonging to a Norwegian shipping company was towed to the Hansahafen in Hamburg. The almost 200 meter long and 37 meter wide transporter is not exactly a beauty. It looks like a huge gray and white block. But the “Höegh Aurora” isn’t about looks – it’s designed more for efficiency. She can transport 9,100 cars on 14 decks.

Operation with ammonia possible

In the long term, it is also about sustainability: the car transporter is one of the first of its kind that could also be powered by ammonia. The “Höegh Aurora” is currently still running on liquid gas. There are 1,500 square meters of solar modules installed on the upper deck, which cover a third of the electricity consumption.

Norwegian shipping company has big plans

The Norwegian shipping company “Höegh Autoliners” has commissioned a total of twelve identical ships of the “Aurora” class – two have been delivered so far. The shipping company wants to be climate-neutral by 2040.
