Hamburg: City of Hamburg buys former HSH Nordbank headquarters

As of: November 12, 2024 7:00 p.m

The city of Hamburg has bought a large property in the city center on Gerhart-Hauptmann-Platz, the headquarters of the former HSH Nordbank. Now it will be examined whether the central library, among other things, can be accommodated there in a planned “House of the Digital World”. The adult education center should also be able to use the building.

The property on Gerhard-Hauptmann-Platz, which the city bought from the insolvency of a subsidiary of the real estate group Signa, has an area the size of ten football fields. The majority is used by the Hamburg Commercial Bank, which emerged from HSH Nordbank. According to Finance Senator Andreas Dressel (SPD), they are looking for a new location. The building also has the “Perle” shopping arcade. Including additional costs, the city is spending around 130 million euros on the purchase.

Pein: More living and culture in the city center

The purchase is an excellent decision for the development of Hamburg’s city center, said Urban Development Senator Karen Pein (SPD). This corresponds to the goal of bringing more living and culture into the city center. “With this object we can put a very special focus on it again.”

Brosda: Property as a “living room of the city”

The planned “House of the Digital World” will not only house the central library and be used by the adult education center, but will also provide space for many other cultural and educational institutions, said Culture Senator Carsten Brosda (SPD): “We were talking about the city’s living room, that could develop there.”

“House of the Digital World”: planned to open in the 2030s

Other ideas for the “House of the Digital World” include studios, digital labs, co-working spaces, studios and lounges. Beforehand, however, the use must be checked and approved by the Hamburg citizenship. After renovation, the “House of the Digital World” could open in the 2030s.
