Hamburg Airport expects significantly more passengers than before in the coming weeks. During the summer holidays, the number of flights is expected to triple.
All flights one day still fit on a display board. Not even every third check-in counter in Terminal 1 is open, and there are even fewer in Terminal 2. Currently, only around 8,000 passengers take off and land in Fuhlsbüttel per day – before the corona pandemic there were around seven times as many. By July, airport boss Michael Eggenschwiler expects the utilization to be up to 70 percent again.

Airport boss advises: plan more time
Eggenschwiler advises passengers to plan more time before a flight than usual: “You shouldn’t come to the last minute, you also need a negative corona test before you fly. You certainly need a little more time at check-in because that Documents to be checked. ” If you get there on time, the trip will be more relaxed.
Many airport employees are still on short-time work
Most of the airport’s employees are still on short-time work; according to the forecast, the airport will remain below the pre-Corona level for a long time to come. According to Eggenschwiler at least until 2025. In two years, the airport should at least not make any more losses. As a shareholder, the city has to pay about half of them.
The airport is suffering from the corona crisis. The number of passengers fell by 74 percent in 2020 compared to the previous year. (29.03.2021) more
