The top surface layer of the Niendorf/Langenhorn runway at Hamburg Airport has been renewed for a week. The construction work is proceeding according to plan and is expected to last until June 28, the airport said on Tuesday.
During this time, all flights will take off and land via Norderstedt and Alsterdorf. The measure is necessary to keep the runway, some of which is over 60 years old, in good condition.
“As is also common in road construction, for example, the top surface layer of our runways has to be renewed at certain intervals. This work cannot be carried out while the runway is in operation,” said project manager Martin Borstelmann.
“Since we also have to work on the runway intersection, i.e. the interface between the two runways, night work is exceptionally necessary.”
During the blocking period, all flights take off and land on the other runway – as is currently the case in June via Norderstedt and Alsterdorf. The renewal of the top surface layer of the Norderstedt/Alsterdorf runway is expected to take place from August 30th to September 27th. During this period, all flights will take off and land via Niendorf and Langenhorn.
