Hamburg: A real house floats through the harbor | Regional

Hamburg – Oops, what’s that floating through the harbor? A real houseboat…

Hundreds of spectators were surprised to see a spectacular house transport on the Elbe on Thursday afternoon! It is the new visitor center of the Oevelgönne museum harbor, which will in future provide information about the ships on display and the work of the association.

The two-storey, approximately 150 square metre green house was transported by several tugboats from its construction site in the Harburg inland port to its final location, the Övelgönne Museum Harbourpulled.

The transport, which took several hours, passed under the Kattwyk Bridge and the Köhlbrand Bridge to its pier in Övelgönne in brilliant sunshine. Shortly after 6 p.m., the new attraction, which is mounted on a huge floating pontoon, docked at the Neumühlen ferry pier.

The total cost of the new visitor centre is around 2 million euros

Visitor centre to provide information about the museum harbour

Construction on the new visitor center has been underway in Harburg’s inner harbor since January. The pontoon on which the building was built had previously been welded together at a shipyard in Lauenburg and was brought to the construction site in Harburg before Christmas 2023.

▶ The future visitor center, which can also be used as a potential event location, will later provide daily information about the types of ships at home in the museum harbor and the work of the association. It will also offer a 360° panoramic view of all the ships in the museum harbor and the modern port of Hamburg.

House is now a so-called “harbor dweller”

The visitor center is moored on the inside of the Neumühlen ferry dock, as a so-called “berth”. “Harbor berths” used to refer to floating houses in the port of Hamburg that were used as workshops, storage and office rooms by port companies.

The total costs of around two million euros come from the Hamburg Parliament’s renovation fund, from funds from the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media (BKM), the budget of the Cultural Authority and from private donations.
