With Petra III, the German Electron Synchrotron (Desy) in Hamburg-Bahrenfeld claims to already be operating one of the best storage ring X-ray sources in the world. But the 2,300 meter long storage ring has even more potential and should therefore be expanded into a high-resolution 3D X-ray microscope. Petra IV expands X-ray vision to all length scales, from the atom to millimeters, it said. This would allow researchers to analyze processes inside a catalytic converter, a battery or a microchip under realistic operating conditions and specifically tailor materials with nanostructures.
“This is a truly great signal from the federal government in these stormy times,” said the chairman of the Desy board of directors, Helmut Dosch, about the budget committee’s decision. Desy’s technological director, Arik Willner, explained: “With the funding now approved by the federal government and the ten percent co-financing from Hamburg, we will begin to build the ultimate nano data factory for science, industry, start-ups and clinics.”
With Petra IV’s 3D X-ray analysis, Hamburg will be at the top of the world in nanoresearch in 2029, said Sina Aylin Koriath, the science policy spokeswoman for the Green Party parliamentary group. “As the Green Party, we are very pleased about this clear commitment to Hamburg as a location for innovation.”
