Hamburg: 35 degrees? It’s supposed to be that hot

The big fear: A heat wave in Germany in the next week. What does this mean for the north? The MOPO asked meteorologists whether summer weather is coming up again in Hamburg – and whether we can actually expect extreme heat.

“At the beginning of next week the heat will come and some of the heat will also come to Hamburg. It could get up to 35 degrees here on Monday and Tuesday,” says meteorologist Dominik Jung. It could stay this hot for three to four days from July 18th. However, this is a very early and therefore uncertain forecast, according to the expert from wetter.net.

Partially more cautious forecasts

The forecasts of the German Weather Service (DWD) are somewhat more cautious. But here, too, the meteorologist Markus Eifried predicts high temperatures for the north. It’s getting warmer towards the weekend – 27 degrees are predicted for Sunday and a maximum temperature of 28 degrees is expected for Monday. After that, temperatures are expected to drop back to a maximum of 24 degrees. “I wouldn’t call that a heat wave,” says Eifried.

But this week, according to the DWD, it should first get a little colder. “On Thursday, July 14, the temperature drops again to a maximum of 21 degrees,” says Eifried. And apart from Sunday, clouds and showers are expected throughout this week – there is also a risk of thunderstorms on the hotter days next week.

Up to 40 degrees: In the southwest of Germany

A heat wave in Hamburg? You can’t say that right now – these are dubious forecasts, according to the meteorologist Alexander König. “A high pressure area is defined as the temperature rising above 30 degrees on three days,” König continues. “I don’t rule out temperatures of up to 40 degrees for the southwest of Germany, but such temperatures are very rare in the north. We’re just closer to the cool sea air.”

It could get hot in other parts of Germany: “In the west, 40 degrees tends to be possible,” says Jung. And the expert from the DWD also confirms: “It seems possible that it will be up to 36 degrees in southwest Germany on July 18th and 19th. (sku)
