Hamas’s military wing claimed responsibility for today’s attack on a checkpoint separating Jerusalem from the occupied West Bank, killing one Israeli soldier and wounding three others, AFP reported.
The attack, carried out by three people on the 41st day of the war between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist movement, was aimed “to avenge the blood of the martyrs in Gaza”, the statement of the Izzedine al-Qassam Brigades said.
The Israeli army announced that a 20-year-old soldier died from the wounds he received while shooting with an automatic weapon, BTA reported.
The three attackers were killed, the Israeli police said.
“Given the amount of ammunition, pistols and axes found in their vehicle, it appears that the attackers were planning a major attack or massacre in Israel,” Israeli police chief Kobi Shabtai told reporters.
