The radical Palestinian group Hamas fired a volley of rockets at Tel Aviv and other neighboring Israeli cities. There are no reports of casualties, reported Reuters, quoted by BTA.
The Hamas movement, which rules the Gaza Strip, claimed responsibility for the attacks. The Israeli military said a total of 15 rockets were fired, six of which were shot down. The military typically seeks to shoot down only those missiles expected to hit populated areas.
In the afternoon rush hour, the wail of air raid sirens rang out across central Israel, sending locals running for bomb shelters.
Police said they were clearing rocket debris in at least one Tel Aviv suburb, possibly from a missile destroyed in mid-air.
With today’s strikes, Hamas demonstrated the ability to strike with long range after weeks of relative calm in central Israel, Reuters notes.
