The Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas broadcast on Monday on its official Telegram account the video of “one of the prisoners in Gaza” in which a young woman speaking Hebrew appears. In this video, impossible to immediately authenticate, we see a young woman awake and lying down, injured in the arm.
The caption indicates that she was kidnapped “on the first day” of the Hamas attack on Israeli soil, on October 7. The young woman says she is being held in Gaza and calls for her release, saying she is being treated well. In a second sequence, she appears on camera and says she is from central Israel.
Israeli officials on Monday morning estimated the number of hostages held in the Gaza Strip during the October 7 attack at 199. Hamas’ armed wing said Monday evening that there were “between 200 and 250.”
22 hostages killed in bombings
This is the first time that Hamas has released a hostage video since its attack on Israeli soil which sparked a war that left thousands dead in Israel and the Gaza Strip, controlled by the Palestinian movement.
More than 1,400 people have been killed in Israel, including several hundred civilians massacred in towns near Gaza, according to the latest figures provided by Israeli officials. Since the attack, Israel has carried out relentless strikes on the Gaza Strip. Around 2,750 people died across the territory, according to local authorities.
