Hamas Releases Hostages: Conflicting Narratives and Propaganda

[New Tang Dynasty News, Beijing time, October 26, 2023]Hamas recently released two female hostages in order to prevent Israel’s ground offensive. One of them was interviewed. Many media focused on the “hell experience” she described, but the mainland media adopted another “translation” and boasted about how “friendly” Hamas is, and was accused of cooperating with Hamas propaganda.

On Monday (October 23), Hamas released two elderly Israeli women. Israel previously accused Hamas of kidnapping at least 222 hostages in the October 7 terrorist attack on Israel.

One of the freed hostages, 85-year-old Yocheved Lifshitz, spoke publicly to the media. Many overseas mainstream media reported her narration of the hostage experience under the title “The Hell I Experienced.”

“They (Hamas) broke into our homes and beat people, abducting the elderly and children indiscriminately,” Lifshitz, who is in a wheelchair, told a news conference.

She also narrated the process of her kidnapping through her daughter’s on-site translator (Video link): She was taken away on a motorcycle with her legs on one side and her head on the other. A Hamas militant sat in front of her and behind her, and they beat her with sticks, making it difficult for her to breathe.

The motorcycle passes through a field. She was later taken into a damp tunnel like a “spider web” where the hostages were held.

“I’ve been through hell,” Lifshitz said.

When many overseas Chinese media reported on this matter, they translated the above reports.

However, when Shanghai’s “Observer Network” reported the incident, it chose to translate a report from the British “Sky News”. The report made no mention of the horrific experience of Lifshitz’s kidnapping, but emphasized how she was treated “humanely” and “friendly” by Hamas during her detention.

“Observer Network” is nominally a “private media”, but its position is consistent with the official Chinese Communist Party and leans toward “ultra-left” ideology.

When other Chinese media reported on the incident, they mostly promoted that Lifshitz “took the initiative” to shake hands with Hamas militants when he was released, praised Hamas’s “friendliness” at the press conference, and accused “the Israeli government of abandoning “We” and so on.

On mainland China’s social media, “patriotic” influencers have used this to attack Israel, Europe and the United States, and continue to incite hatred against Jews. Many CCP cyber forces and “little pinks” took the opportunity to “praise” Hamas and accuse Israel of “lying.” This kind of propaganda that confuses black and white makes people suspicious, as if Hamas did not kidnap innocent civilians from Israel, but Hamas “rescued the suffering people” from the Israeli government.

Hamas is currently creating public opinion and trying its best to prevent Israel’s ground offensive to avoid catastrophe. Its methods include exaggerating the “civilian casualties” in Gaza, threatening the West with the lives of hostages, etc. The so-called “unconditional release” of several hostages is also alleged to be for this purpose. The Chinese Communist Party and some overseas left-wing media are doing their best to cooperate with Hamas’s propaganda.

The “hostage experience” reported by mainland media triggered a completely different response on the X platform (formerly Twitter) than on domestic social media. Overseas netizens almost unanimously criticized the CCP’s propaganda for confusing right and wrong.

Some netizens said that they believed the hostage’s “hell experience”, but they also “believe a little” in her praise of Hamas, because after all, “her lover/weakness is still in the hands of Hamas.”

According to foreign media reports, Jocheved Lifshitz and her 83-year-old husband Oded Lifshitz were kidnapped by Hamas, but Hamas only released Jocheved Lifshitz Her husband is still in the hands of Hamas.

Many netizens left messages on the Come on.” “(Hamas) is so friendly that I almost want to be arrested by them.” “Why would Hamas take you as a hostage? Oh, it’s to protect you.”

A netizen summarized 6 facts:

“1. Hamas used a motorcycle to kidnap the old lady from Israel to Gaza, Palestine. The old lady must have been frightened;

“2. The old lady must have seen Hamas killing Israeli civilians and was traumatized;

“3. On the Hamas side, even if the old lady was not beaten, she should have heard and seen others being beaten, and the food she ate was definitely not delicacies;

“4. The reason why the old lady was put back with all her arms and legs intact was because the Israeli army was pressing down on the border and Hamas was intimidated! It’s not because Hamas is kind and has a conscience;

“5. Just listen to what the old lady said. Before she left, she must have been threatened by Hamas, saying that if she didn’t say good things about Hamas, her other relatives who were captured would be executed, or they would be imprisoned in Israel. Kill the agents;

“6. Hamas released the old lady because it kidnapped the old lady.”

Another netizen thought: “This old lady did say that the kidnappers were generous to them~ and she was very professional and paid great attention to women’s physiological hygiene. But she also said that she was scared and had been beaten. And her husband was still in the hands of the kidnappers. . It sounded like she was in Stockholm, maybe she was being blackmailed, or she didn’t have a clear mind in the first place.”

The “Stockholm” mentioned by this netizen should refer to “Stockholm syndrome”.

Stockholm Syndrome, also known as hostage complex or hostage syndrome, is a psychological phenomenon in which the victim develops feelings for the perpetrator, sympathizes with the perpetrator, agrees with some of the perpetrator’s views and ideas, and even helps the perpetrator in turn. A kind of sentiment of the person. According to Freud’s theory, Stockholm Syndrome is a self-defense mechanism in which victims feel that they are no longer threatened when they believe their perpetrator’s thoughts.

Some classic cases show that under the terror and high pressure created by the perpetrator, if the victim feels a little bit of “kindness” from the perpetrator, it will be easier to “cry with gratitude” and even develop feelings for the perpetrator.

The CCP is accused of being the “master” of creating Stockholm Syndrome. Puyi, the last emperor of China, was imprisoned by the CCP for many years and saved his life. Therefore, he was grateful to the CCP and took the initiative to brainwash himself. He wrote the book “My First Half of Life” to thank the CCP for “rescuing” him from the “sin and shame” of the first half of his life. come out.
