The American Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday that Hamas expressed its rejection of the American plan for a temporary truce in Gaza.
The American newspaper explained, citing mediators, that Hamas has largely rejected the American plan, and is instead planning to present its own plan to stop the conflict, which has been ongoing for 6 months with Israel.
The Wall Street Journal reported that this refusal demonstrates “the broad disagreement between the two parties,” and also reflects Hamas’ overconfidence that diplomatic and domestic pressure on Israel to end the war gives the movement, which the United States classifies as terrorist, the upper hand in the negotiations.
Hamas seeks a permanent ceasefire and a complete withdrawal of Israeli soldiers from Gaza in exchange for the release of hostages held in the Strip.
Israel expressed its openness to negotiate the American proposal for a temporary truce, but it wants to continue its military campaign.
Features of the American plan?
- The US plan, presented by CIA Director William Burns to officials from Israel, Hamas, Qatar and Egypt in Cairo, calls for a six-week ceasefire in Gaza.
- During the cessation of fighting, Hamas will release 40 hostages held by the movement in the Gaza Strip, in exchange for 900 Palestinian prisoners from Israeli prisons, including 100 who are serving long sentences on terrorism-related charges.
- Israel’s war cabinet – made up of Benjamin Netanyahu, Yoav Gallant and Benny Gantz – met on Tuesday evening to discuss the proposal, before they then discuss it with a wider group of ministers.
