Hamas Ready to Release 70 Hostages in Exchange for Ceasefire

The armed wing of the Palestinian armed group Hamas said on the 13th that it was willing to release up to 70 women and children detained in the Gaza corridor in exchange for a five-day ceasefire.

Hamas launched a cross-border attack on southern Israel on October 7, killing about 1,200 people and taking 240 people hostage to Gaza. Israel subsequently launched air strikes and sent troops to Gaza.

The Qassam Brigades, an armed faction of Hamas, released a recorded message on the social media “Paper Planes”, saying that it was prepared to release up to 70 women and children hostages in exchange for a five-day ceasefire by the Israeli army. Spokesman Ubeda claimed that Israel had asked for the release of a hundred people, “We told the mediator (Qada) that during a five-day truce, we could release fifty of them. Due to the obstacles of prisoners being held by different factions , the number can reach seventy people.”

“We told the mediators that if we get a five-day truce and allow aid to come through and reach all our people across Gaza, we can release the hostages,” Ubeda said.

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu told the US media on the 12th that there “may be” an agreement to release the hostages held in Gaza, but did not provide any detailed information.

Although Ubeda accused Israel of “delaying and evading” the proposal, Washington Post columnist Ignasis pointed out that senior Israeli officials said that Israel and Hamas were close to reaching a hostage agreement that would release most of the hostages. Israeli women and children kidnapped on October 7th.

The report said an announcement could come within days if final details are ironed out. “The broad outlines of the agreement are understood,” said the Israeli official, who requested anonymity. The interim agreement calls for the release of groups of Israeli women and children, as well as the release of Palestinian women and young people held in Israeli prisons. Israel hopes that all 100 women and children held hostage will be released, but the number initially released may be smaller.

The number of Palestinians who may be released is unclear, but an Arab official told Ignasis that there were at least 120 people in prison. Ubayda claimed in the recording that Qatar was mediating efforts to release 100 Israeli hostages in exchange for 200 Palestinian children and 75 women.

Israeli officials said the agreement could lead to a five-day temporary ceasefire, accompanied by a hostage and prisoner exchange. The ceasefire would allow the safe passage of Israeli hostages, and could also approve more international aid for Palestinian civilians in Gaza, which should ease local tensions.
