Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper explained that Hamas insists that Marwan Barghouti be among those included in the upcoming deal with Israel.
The newspaper quoted sources as saying that there are estimates indicating the “immaturity” of the new prisoner exchange deal between Hamas and Israel before the first week of January.
The head of Hamas’ political bureau, Ismail Haniyeh, arrived in Cairo on Wednesday to hold discussions on declaring a possible truce for the ongoing war in Gaza between the movement and Israel.
The movement reported in a statement that Haniyeh arrived in Cairo to hold discussions with Egyptian officials about developments in the war in Gaza and “many other files.”
Haniyeh, accompanied by a delegation from Hamas, will meet with the head of the Egyptian Intelligence Service, Abbas Kamel.
Before leaving Doha, Haniyeh met with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian, according to Iranian media.
A source in the Jihad movement also told Agence France-Presse that a delegation headed by the movement’s Secretary-General, Ziad al-Nakhalah, will head to Cairo early next week at an Egyptian invitation, within the framework of “discussions aimed at stopping the war and aggression, a ceasefire, and a comprehensive exchange deal” with Israel.
After more than two months of war, and despite Israel continuing its devastating bombing and ground operation in the Gaza Strip, some movements indicate a move towards declaring a second truce, after the one that lasted a week at the end of November, and allowed the release of 105 hostages held in the Gaza Strip in exchange for 240 Palestinian prisoners.
