The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has reported that Hamas leader Ismail Haniya was killed Wednesday morning in an attack targeting his residence in Tehran, the capital of Iran.

The report clarifies that the bombing also resulted in the death of one of Haniya’s personal bodyguards.

In an official statement, the IRGC expressed its deep condolences to the Palestinian and Iranian people, as well as to the brave fighters of the resistance front, calling the incident a “tragedy.”

The authorities have also indicated that they are carrying out an investigation to clarify the facts and determine the implications of this attack, and have promised to report on the results in the near future.

Ismail Haniya was in the Iranian capital to attend the inauguration ceremony of President-elect Masoud Pezeshkian, which took place on Monday, the day before the attack. The event, which brought together leaders and representatives of the Islamic resistance, was overshadowed by the violence of the attack.

Hamas, for its part, confirmed the death of its leader in a subsequent statement, in which it said he was killed in “a treacherous Zionist raid on his residence in Tehran.”

“The Hamas Islamic Resistance Movement mourns with the children of our great Palestinian people, of the Arab and Islamic nation, and of all the free peoples of the world, the brother Leader, the martyr mujahideen Ismail Haniya,” the text says.
