Palestinian resistance group Hamas condemned Friday’s UN Security Council resolution calling for for expanded humanitarian access, but does not include a demand for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, Anadolu Agency reports.
Hamas described the resolution as an insufficient step that does not meet the requirements of the catastrophic conditioncaused by the (Israeli) terrorist war machine in Gaza.
He also noted in a statement that the resolution “does not include an international decision to stop the genocidal war of the Israeli terrorist occupation against our Palestinian people in Gaza.”
The statement accused the US of emptying the resolution of its essence and opposing “the will of the international community and the UN General Assembly to stop (Israeli) aggression against our defenseless Palestinian people”.
We recall that the Security Council on Friday adopted a resolution which calls for urgent steps to immediately resolve the safe humanitarian access to Gaza, amid the ongoing Israeli offensive against the enclave.
The resolution did not call for an immediate end to the fighting, which was some of the sensitive wording for the US. It wasn’t until Thursday that Washington signaled support after days of resistance to previous revisions of the document.
Last week The UN General Assembly passed by an overwhelming majority resolution calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza. 153 UN member states voted for the resolution, 10 voted against and 23 abstained. The decision is not binding.
The UN Security Council has finally adopted a resolution on Gaza
Two countries abstained – the USA and Russia
Since October 7, there have been deaths in Gaza to at least 20,057 deaths and 53,320 injured, most of whom children and women. It has caused massive damage to infrastructure and an “unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe,” according to Palestinian and international sources.
