Hamas claims responsibility for foiled terror attack in Tel Aviv – 2024-08-24 00:09:10

Yahya Sinwar, Hamas leader in Gaza.

Israeli authorities confirmed on Monday that an explosion last night in Tel Avivwhich claimed the life of the suspect carrying the device and injured another person, was an attempted terrorist attack.

“We can confirm that this was a terrorist attack involving the detonation of a powerful explosive.”said Israeli police on Monday, which have been investigating the incident since last night alongside agents from the bomb disposal unit, forensic investigators and the Israeli domestic intelligence service.

Only one passerby was injured in the explosion and was taken to hospital in a moderate condition. The body of the suspected attacker, aged around 50, was severely disfigured, so his remains have not yet been identified.

Shortly after, the armed wing of the Islamist group Hamas claimed the act, according to a message on Telegram, which he said he had perpetrated in collaboration with the Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

«The Brigades say that martyrdom operations in the occupied territories will once again take center stage as long as the occupation’s massacres, displacement of civilians and policy of assassination continue»the text warned, referring to the war in Gaza and the lethal Israeli incursions in the West Bank.

According to the Israeli newspaper The Times of IsraelThe man was carrying a bomb in his backpack as he walked down Lehi Street in the south of the town when the device exploded. Haartez, meanwhile, says the target of the attack may have been a nearby synagogue.

The growing tension since the start of the war in Gaza, which has already claimed more than 40,000 Palestinian lives, has raised fears of an escalation of violence in Israel, as happened during the Second Intifada (2000-05), with suicide attacks by Palestinians in public spaces such as buses and nightclubs.

So far in 2024, a total of 22 Israelis (half of them soldiers or police) have been killed in fourteen Palestinian attacks, including stabbings, car-rammings or shootings, most of them near Jewish settlements in the occupied Palestinian territory of West Bankaccording to an EFE count.

Meanwhile, at least 292 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire in the West Bank, mostly at the hands of the military during the regular army raids in Yenín, tulkarem o Nablusamong other hotbeds of armed Palestinian resistance, and a dozen attacks by Jewish settlers, which are becoming more frequent and violent.
