“To say we are getting close to a ceasefire agreement is a fallacy,” a senior Hamas official said today, after US President Joe Biden said on Friday that a deal had “never been so close” to a ceasefire and release of the hostages.
“We are not facing an agreement or real negotiations but rather the imposition of American orders,” Sami Abu Zohri, a member of Hamas’ political bureau, told AFP in a statement, denouncing “a huge setback” during the talks held on Thursday and Friday in Doha between the mediating countries, the United States, Qatar and Egypt, and the Israelis.
Massacres of civilians continue
The eyes of international public opinion may be on Qatar and the new ceasefire negotiations, but Israel continues undaunted to bombard Gaza and Lebanon causing new civilian deaths.
The Gaza Civil Defense Agency announced that 15 members of the same family, including three women and nine children, were killed by an Israeli strike overnight in the center of the Gaza Strip.
All were killed in an airstrike on “their house and neighboring warehouses in al-Zawaida,” said Civil Defense Agency spokesman Mahmoud Basal, who added that the victims, nine of whom were aged between two and 17, belonged to in the Azlah family.
A total of at least 40,074 Palestinians have been killed and 92,537 wounded in the Israeli army’s offensive in the Gaza Strip since October 7, the health ministry of the Palestinian enclave ruled by the Islamist group Hamas said in a statement on Saturday.
At least 69 people have been killed in the past 48 hours, said Hamas’ health ministry, which usually does not report on Friday.
