Supporters of the Palestinian radical movement Hamas were unaware of the Nova music festival, which was taking place in southern Israel, and decided to spontaneously attack its participants. This statement was made by the “Aaretz” newspaper, citing sources from the Israeli security services.
They say the militants may have received information about the festival via drones and hang-gliders, after which they sent additional troops to the scene. This is indicated by body camera footage of one of the Hamas supporters, which shows him asking a captured man for directions to Kibbutz Reim, where the festival is being held, as well as the fact that the militants did not arrive at the site from the border with the Gaza Strip, and along Highway 232, which runs through Israeli territory parallel to the disengagement line.
According to the police, at least 364 people were killed that day. At the same time, the publication notes, it cannot be ruled out that some of them died as a result of a tragic accident: an Israeli helicopter that opened fire on Hamas fighters may also have hit festival participants who were nearby. The Israel Defense Forces have not officially announced such an incident.
On October 8, a day after the Hamas attack, Israeli volunteers found at least 260 bodies in Kibbutz Reim, located in the south of the country. All the dead were at an outdoor music festival when the extremists attacked. Hamas supporters reportedly shot dead many of the participants in the event on the morning of October 7.
