Doron Steinbrecher: A Story of Resilience Amidst the Israel-Hamas Conflict
On October 7, 2023, Doron Steinbrecher’s life changed forever. The 31-year-old Romanian-Israeli veterinary nurse was kidnapped from her home in Kibbutz Kfar Aza during a terrorist invasion. As she hid under her bed, Doron managed to send a final voice note to her loved ones: “They’ve got me, they’ve got me,” her mother recounted in the Financial Times.
Hamas announced on Sunday that Doron, along with Emily Damari and Romi Gonen, would be released on the first day of phase one of the hostage-ceasefire deal. This marked a glimmer of hope for her family, who had endured months of uncertainty and anguish.
Concerns for Doron’s Welfare
Little was known about Doron’s condition during her captivity. Her family expressed deep concern that she was not receiving her daily medication. They met with representatives of the Red Cross, only to be reprimanded for raising the issue. After 107 days in captivity, a video surfaced in January, showing Doron, Karina ariev (19), and Daniela Gilboa (19) speaking from within the tunnels. This was the first sign of life since her abduction.
Doron’s father, Roni Steinbrecher, told Haaretz, “If I couldn’t switch places with her and sit there instead, I’d do it without hesitation.”
Before October 7
Doron was known for her close family ties. She chose to live near her sister, Yamit Ashkenazi, and was deeply involved in the lives of her nephews. “Every morning, Doron asked about the kids to make sure they were okay. I was torn between the desire to run and get her and the desire to keep my kids safe,” yamit told Ynet.
Speaking to The Sun, Doron’s mother Simone shared that her nephews continue to ask about her, as they remain in the community where Doron was taken.
